As of Thursday this week airlines will be required to include all mandatory taxes and fees in advertised airfares. As part of provisions aimed at making the full cost of flying more transparent, carriers and ticket agents will also be forced to clearly disclose potential baggage fees on the first screen displaying a price quotation for a specific itinerary. U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the new regulations were all about ensuring fair treatment of the traveling public. “Airline passengers have rights, and they should be able to expect fair and reasonable treatment when booking a trip and when they fly,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said. “The new passenger protections taking effect this week are a continuation of our effort to help air travelers receive the respect they deserve.” Under another rule, from this week onwards, passengers will be able to hold a reservation without payment, or cancel a booking without penalty for 24 hours after a booking is made. Additionally, carriers will be required to notify passengers of flight delays of more than 30 minutes, as well as cancellations and diversions. Tickets will also no longer be subject to price hikes once they are bought.
