Thai scurries for MICE recovery

Wednesday, December 07, 2011

Thailand’s local Government has teamed up with local MICE leaders to launch an international campaign that will push a speedy recovery after recent flooding affected up to 24 events over the past month.

The two Groups pushed Thailand: Destination of “CHOICES” out into the international market this week, aiming to regain international attention and confidence as well as restore the sector before the third quarter next year.

Divided into three phases, the campaign will kick off with daily updates and fact sheets to the industry and shareholders followed by the launch of confidence and boosting activities through Believe in Thailand and concluded in March 2012 with an invite to national leaders to join key events and issue statements through video.

“We also have arranged to inject additional funds to promote MICE events, enhance market promotion and give financial support for events that have not been cancelled or postponed,” Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) president Akapol Sorasuchart explained.

Although many schedule events were “completely unaffected’ during flooding, up to 3.32 billion in revenue has been lost for the month with MICE visitors falling 250,000.

Mr Sorasuchart said that many events planned for next year will also continue to go ahead but hopes and expects with the help of Team Thailand and the private sector to see a “strong and rapid recovery”.

“For the longer term, we have proposed for government consideration a Recovery Plan to stimulate both the international and domestic MICE market,” Mr Sorasuchart added.

“This includes a proposal to give 300% tax relief on MICE expenditures, provide regular updates on progress on MICE industry’s recovery, and cooperation with the Federation of Thai Industries to provide counselling and encourage domestic tourism among those affected by the floods.”

Specifically targeting the European market, TCEB added that between 22 November and 1 December they had launched a marketing campaign to boost numbers from Europe after revising its MICE projections for the continent down from 100,800 to 90,000 for 2011.
